The Reconstructive Surgery Institute at Hospital da Luz Coimbra - ICR, provides patients with a prestigious Clinical Body and its Technological Capability in the Humanization of Health Care in a constant Scientific and Technological Update, with the purpose of providing Quality Service.

Professor Dr. Abel Nascimento, Surgeon, was a worldwide pioneer in Nerve Surgery (nerve micro-surgery/microscopic surgery), when he started to perform this kind of surgery in the 80's. He performed about a Thousand Brachial Plex surgeries in children and adults and about another thousand and a half Nerve Surgeries to other nerves at the upper and lower limb level. The Surgeon has been introducing Innovative Techniques in various fields of Surgery, in Europe and the rest of the World.

The Multidisciplinary and Excellent Reconstructive Surgery Team at Hospital da Luz Coimbra led by Professor Dr. Abel Nascimento, cooperates daily in the Treatment of diverse pathologies in National and International Patients.

Brief Curriculum Vitae

Orthopaedic surgeon, was chief of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Hospital Centre of the University of Coimbra (CHUC) and professor at the Medical School of the University of Coimbra.

Performed Hand/Microsurgery/Surgical Anatomy and Experimental Surgery Research residency at the René Descartes University (Paris).

Also performed Hand Surgery/Microsurgery residency in London, Lausanne and Louisville (USA) and has a Doctorate by the René Descartes University (Paris).

Founded CHUC's Hand/Microsurgery Unit and was President of the Portuguese Hand Surgery Society.

Founding Member of the European Hand Surgery Society, received several national and foreign scientific awards for his work in Hand Surgery and Microsurgery.

Is part of the FreeHand system deployment team and part of the European gait recovery research team.

Is the coordinator of the Reconstructive Surgery Institute.


Member of 19 scientific societies, national and foreign.

Occupied the position of Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Portuguese Hand Surgery Society.

Founding Member of the European Hand Surgery Society, occupying the role of Delegate in the European Hand Surgery Societies Federation (EHSSF) and the International Hand Surgery Societies Federation (IHSSF).

Founding member of Club Narakas (Brachial Plexus) and Club Tubiana (Hand Surgery).

Jury Member of the Orthopedics Hospital Graduation in Portugal and European Jury Member of the Hand Surgery Certificate.

Participated in many congresses and scientific reunions, having given conferences as a guest and published about two hundred scientific papers in Portugal and abroad.

Member of the Scientific Comitee for the French magazine “La Main” Received several national and foreign scientific awards regarding Hand Surgery and Microsurgery.

Belongs to the FreeHand System implementation team, having applied several electronic systems, in Portugal and abroad, for the rehabilitation of quadriplegics’ upper limbs.

Integrates the European Formation and Reception Centre Network of Hand Surgery Fellows.

Integrates the Leonardo da Vinci European Project – formation for the understanding of the lymphatic system and treatment of its pathologies
